What can you do yourself?

Supplement your meals with foods rich in magnesium and minerals:

  • Fruits such as avocado, nuts and seeds, figs
  • Dark green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, chard, spinach, Brussels sprouts, purslane, …
  • Dark chocolate or raw cocoa

Eat these along with foods rich in vitamin C, such as fruits and vegetables.

Additional magnesium is needed during periods of growth. As during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, that’s when the fetus grows the fastest. Extra magnesium plays a role in the baby’s birth weight and brain development. Magnesium also aids in the growth and development of children’s bones, teeth and muscles.

Do not take magnesium-rich foods together with phytic acid-rich products such as bread and legumes. This is because phytic acid binds the minerals, causing them to be excreted just like that. Fluorine from toothpaste also reduces magnesium absorption.

Drink plenty of water, possibly with lemon juice, tea or soup. In a properly hydrated body, magnesium is better absorbed by the cells. Drinks with caffeine (such as coffee and cola), high sugar (such as soft drinks and alcohol) dehydrate your body and flush out magnesium. Medications such as antacids and diuretics also increase magnesium excretion.
